Quaternary Ammonium Salts
R. Alan Jones, “Quaternary Ammonium Salts (Best Synthetic Methods)”
Academic Press; 1st edition (January 2001) | ISBN: 012389171X | 544 pages | PDF | 9,5 Mb

This **** provides experimental methods for a wide range of organic reactions, systematically arranged according to reaction type, and describes the advantages and limitations of the procedures. Traditional methods to speed up organic reactions involve energy-consuming processes and costly and environmentally “unfriendly” solvents. Additionally, isolation of the product requires energy and time-consuming purification processes. A simple solution, especially for reactions involving anionic reactants, is the use of phase-transfer catalysis. Quaternary ammonium cations have the ability to transfer the anionic reactants as non-solvated ion-pairs from aqueous media into organic media. The resultant effect is to increase the rate of the organic reaction by enhancing the reactivity of the anionic species and increasing the encounter rate with the organic substrate. Side reactions are frequently eliminated so that the overall yield of the desired product is increased.
Quaternary Ammonium Salts presents procedures for reducing reaction times and the need for extreme conditions, which are frequently encountered under standard reaction procedures.
This is the only book to be published on quaternary ammonium salts. Best Synthetic Methods volumes allow the practicing synthetic chemist to choose between all the alternatives and assess their real advantages and limitations. Each volume of the series deals with a particular topic from a practical point of view, giving detailed examples and precise experimental directions and hints. With the emphasis on laboratory use, these volumes represent a comprehensive and practical guide to modern synthetic organic chemistry.

Keynotes in Organic Chemistry

by Andy Parsons

The development of university organic chemistry curricula and the trend towards modularisation of chemistry courses has driven the need for smaller, highly focussed and accessible organic chemistry ****books, which complement the very detailed “standard ****s”, to guide students through the key principles of the subject.
This concise and accessible book provides organic chemistry notes for students studying chemistry and related courses at undergraduate level, covering core organic chemistry in a format ideal for learning and rapid revision. The material is organised so that fundamental concepts are introduced early, then built on to provide an overview of the essentials of functional group chemistry and reactivity, leading the student to a solid understanding of the basics of organic chemistry. Graphical presentation of information is central to the book, to facilitate the rapid assimilation, understanding and recall of critical concepts, facts and definitions.
Students wanting a comprehensive and accessible overview of organic chemistry to build the necessary foundations for a more detailed study will find this book an ideal source of the information they require. In addition, the structured presentation, highly graphical nature of the **** and practice problems with outline answers will provide an invaluable framework and aid to revision for students preparing for examinations.

Review

"There are a number of strengths to this book. Firstly, the usage of diagrams and key phrases/bullet points is excellent, making the book user friendly and educationally sound.
The book complements, rather than competes with, standard core ****. It is distinct in its approach and should not be considered as just another organic chemistry book.
I imagine that this book will prove popular with undergraduates and I would be happy to recommend this book to my students - I am sure that their knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of chemisty would improve as a consequence."
Synthesis, 2004
"The author has made an effort to prsent the material clearly and to limit the **** to what is essential ("pictures speak louder than words"). This often works very well."
"The book fufulls its aim of providing a short summary of organic chemistry for revision purposes."
Angewandte Chemie 2004
"Despite the book's small size, each chapter is thorough, with coversge of all important reactions found at first-year level... ideal for the first-year student wishing to revise... and priced and designed appropriately." The Times Higher Education Supplement, 2004
"Parsons has successfully distilled an entire 1200 page ****book to the essentials a student should take away from a full year of undergraduate organic chemistry"
"...this **** provides an outline of what should be known and understood, including fundamental concepts and mechanisms"
"...the **** can then allow the student to discern quickly which reactions/concepts they understand and which ones they don't."
Journal of Chemical Education, May 2004

Organic Photochemistry and Photophysics

Editorial Reviews

Review
[This book] is a reference that should be useful to experts in the field for an in-depth survey of the recent literature. As most of the chapters include a concise introduction, the book can also serve as an excellent resource for graduate students or anyone who is new to the fields of organic photochemistry and photophysics.
-Anna D. Gudmundsdóttir, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Vol. 128, No. 24, 2006
Product Description
Featuring contributions from leading experts, Organic Photochemistry and Photophysics is a unique resource that addresses the organic photochemistry and photophysical behavior in aromatic molecules, thiocarbonyls, selected porphyrins, and ****lloporphyrins. The book presents theories pertaining to radiative and radiationless transitions. It describes excited-state proton-transfer reactions of aromatic compounds and the physical, energetic, and environmental effects of atom transfer reactions. The **** discusses the role of the carbonyl and azo groups in ketones and azoalkanes in the development of photochemistry, followed by a review of nucleophilic substitution reactions in the photochemistry of aromatics (also called photosubstitution) and the various atomic bonds that result from these reactions. The book presents studies that explain the factors that govern the nature and efficiencies of SET-promoted photochemical reactions. It then focuses on photoamination as a convenient, powerful, and environmentally friendly synthetic process for transforming a variety of substrates into the corresponding aminated compounds. The final chapter explores how dye structure affects the sequence-dependence of DNA binding, which has potential applications in nonlinear optics and DNA detection as well as incorporating DNA into various nanostructures and devices. With an emphasis on the current uses of light in both materials chemistry and medicinal chemistry, this book serves as a comprehensive resource on photochemical reactions and discusses topics that are useful for researchers as well as newcomers in the fields of photochemistry, photobiology, photomedicine, and photophysics
