Organic Chemistry
By John McMurry

Publisher: Thomson Brooks/Cole
Number Of Pages: 1376
Publication Date: 1999-09-08
Sales Rank: 607014
ISBN / ASIN: 0534373666
EAN: 9780534373665
Book Description:
Widely and consistently praised as the most clearly written book on the market. Why? In John McMurry's words: "I have been asked hundreds of times over the past ten years why I wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words. I write to explain chemistry to students the way I wish it had been explained to me years ago." Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable for students. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry book applies to McMurry: It works! Mainstream in level, McMurry's coverage is concise yet doesn't omit any key topics. McMurry blends the traditional functional-group approach with a mechanistic approach. The primary approach, by functional group, begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex so that readers who are not yet versed in the subtleties of mechanisms are first exposed to the what of chemistry before beginning to grapple with the why. Within this primary organization, the author places a heavy emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities. Currently in use at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada, McMurry's Organic Chemistry is also an international bestseller from the United Kingdom to the Pacific Rim

Organic Chemistry
By Jonathan Clayden

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Number Of Pages: 1536
publication Date: 2000-08-25
Sales Rank: 79875
ISBN / ASIN: 0198503466
EAN: 978019850346
Book Description:
A new style of ****book, aimed principally at the European (and British in particular) student. It is needed because almost all current organic chemistry ****s are written to a fixed American pattern. This **** is different from these in a number of important ways: The approach is based on explanation rather than fact. The functional group approach (alkane, alkene, alkyne) has served American State College readers well but increasingly students and instructors are attracted more to an approach based on mechanism and reaction type. This approach aims at understanding rather than factual knowledge and, though slower at the start, eventually gives the student power to understand compounds and reactions never previously encountered. This is a big advantage in a science already too large for individuals to learn and which is annually expanding at an ever greater rate. The basics of the subject are explained carefully and thoroughly. How to draw molecules realistically and how to draw mechanisms to reveal the fundamental chemistry are both emphasised. Important points are revisited when they become relevant in later chapters. Examples are very important too. New examples are given each time a concept resurfaces, and examples from everyday life and medicinal chemistry are frequently used. The authors want the readers to be excited by the universality of organic chemistry rather than be overwhelmed by facts. The design of the book has features to help comprehension. Structures are drawn in red, and black is used on them for emphasis. Other colours are used flexibly to draw attention to atoms, molecules, orbitals, arrows or whatever the authors want to emphasise rather than being used in a rigid systematic way. There are four types of "box" used to separate material from the main ****, ranging from extra important summaries to diversions which can be omitted at first reading. The early chemistry chapters feature carbonyl group reactions because addition to carbonyl groups is probably the easiest reaction to understand. Thereafter the chemistry develops in a logical sequence but chapters on spectroscopy, stereochemistry etc are interspersed among those dealing with chemical reactions. From time to time review chapters summarise what has been described in a particular area. A personal and honest approach is adopted. The authors write clearly and directly to the reader, sharing their enthusiasms, understandings and doubts. If they believe an explanation is imperfect or controversial, they say so. They show that organic chemistry is developing rapidly, and that new ideas continually emerge to replace the old. The authors know from experience what conceptual difficulties often overwhelm students at an early stage in their studies and they devote more space to these points, give more examples, and revisit them when they can be applied. The aim is to help the readers master these points for themselves rather than just learn them off by heart.

* Publication Date: 2001-08-01
* ISBN / ASIN: 0080439527
Book Description:
When Elsevier published Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry II in 1996, it became obvious that phosphorus heterocycles had developed into the fourth major strand of heterocyclic chemistry. It seemed natural to collect all the phosphorus chapters, update them and offer them as a single volume.Phosphorus-Carbon Heterocyclic Chemistry: The Rise of a New Domain comprehensively examines the synthesis, spectroscopic properties, reactivity and catalytic applications of all phosphorus-carbon heterocycles. The most significant phosphorus heterocycles incorporating other heteroatoms, such as heterophospholes and heterophosphinines, are also covered. The introductory chapter describes the rise of this new field that has developed, over the years, into the fourth major branch of heterocyclic chemistry.Written by several founders of the field, Phosphorus-Carbon Heterocyclic Chemistry will be the reference work within the domain for

Industrial Organic Chemicals, 2nd Edition
By Harold A. Wittcoff, Bryan G. Reuben, Jeffery S. Plotkin

Publisher: Wiley-Interscience

Number Of Pages: 696
Publication Date: 2004-07-09
ISBN / ASIN: 0471443859
Broadly describes the essential topics of the organic chemicals industryIn the past two decades, the organic chemicals industry has undergone unprecedented restructuring, complicated feedstock problems, and massive shifts of capacity to developing countries. In the developed world, specialty chemicals have gained increasing significance. Although the fundamentals of organic chemical and polymer production have remained largely constant, one needs to be aware of the economic, structural, and political changes in the industry in order to understand its current state. This much-expanded Second Edition of Industrial Organic Chemicals presents the various technologies and processes involved in the organic chemicals industry as an organized body of knowledge. It describes the chemistry of the seven basic building block chemicals and their derivatives, how they are manufactured, their economic importance, uses, and associated environmental issues. Also covered are two topics essential to an understanding of modern industrial chemistry-catalysis and polymer synthesis.Key additions to this Second Edition include discussion of:* Sustainability and "green" chemistry* Dendrimers* ****llocenes* Chemicals in biotechnology* Specialty chemicals for pharmaceuticals, electronics, fire retardation, fuel additives, foods, and other uses* Economic, political, and social concepts for understanding future directions of the industryIndustrial Organic Chemicals, Second Edition presents the chemistry of both large-scale and specialty products while taking into account important political, environmental, and economic considerations. It provides both a narrative account of the evolution of today's industry from the viewpoint of authors intimately involved with the changes, and an essential reference for chemists, chemical engineers, plastics engineers, petroleum engineers, managers, executives, and policy makers working in and with the organic chemical industry

Modern Organic Synthesis in the Laboratory

(Paperback)
by Jie Jack Li (Author), Chris Limberakis (Author), Derek A. Pflum

Book Description
Searching for reaction in organic synthesis has been made much easier in the current age of computer databases. However, the dilemma now is which procedure one selects among the ocean of choices. Especially for novices in the laboratory, it becomes a daunting task to decide what reaction conditions to experiment with first in order to have the best chance of success. This collection intends to serve as an "older and wiser lab-mate" one could have by compiling many of the most commonly used experimental procedures in organic synthesis. With chapters that cover such topics as functional group manipulations, oxidation, reduction, and carbon-carbon bond formation, Modern Organic Synthesis in the Laboratory will be useful for both graduate students and professors in organic chemistry and medicinal chemists in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries.

Introduction to Organic Photochemistry

by J. D. Coyle

Book Description
Introduction to Organic Photochemistry John D. Coyle, The Open University, Milton Keynes The purpose of this book is to provide an introductory account of the major types of organic photochemical reactions, to enable those with a prior knowledge of basic organic chemistry to appreciate the differences between processes which occur photochemically (through an electronically excited state) and those that occur thermally (directly from the electronic ground state). The material is organized according to organic functional groups, in parallel with the approach adopted in most general ****books on organic chemistry. In this respect it differs from many of the existing, older organic photochemistry ****s. The first chapter provides an account of the distinctive features of photochemical reactions, and a physical/mechanistic framework for the descriptions in the rest of the book. The overall emphasis is on organic photoreactions potentially useful in synthesis. The book thus integrates this branch of chemistry with broader aspects of the subject, and introduces the reader to important applications of organic photochemistry. .

Structure Determination of Organic Compounds: Tables of Spectral Data
(Paperback)
by E. Pretsch (Author), P. Bühlmann (Author), C. Affolter

Review
The book begins with correlation tables for H and C NMR, IR, UV, and MS. The mass spectrometry sections includes common fragments, absolute masses, isotopes and isotope patterns of all the natural elements and halogen combinations. The next section contains combinations. The next section contains combination tables, based on functional group, which list the characteristic spectral values for each spectral method, with useful comments. This section would be a very valuable introduction for beginning students. The book comes with a CD which has programs for molecular drawing, all structures possible for a given formula, and estimation of H and C NMR chemical shifts, limited to 15 heavy atoms. R. Gary Amiet, Dept. of Appl. Chemistry, RMIT University Chemistry in Australia, Magazine of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, 2001, Vol. 68, Issue 5, p. 36 This book is intended as a short ****book and a hands-on guide for interpreting experimental spectral data and elucidating the chemical structure of the compound behind it. This is the third, and completely revised, edition of the book whose earlier editions were highly successful. The new edition follows the same basic concepts as earlier editions, in that it provides a representative set of reference data for the interpretation of C NMR, H NMR, IR, mass and UV/Vis spectra. The amount of reference data has been doubled (especially for MS and IR) and the order and selection of data for the various spectroscopic methods is now arranged strictly in the same way. The CD-ROM supplied with the book contains programs for estimating NMR chemical shifts and generating isomers based on structural information. An extensive hyper****-based tutorial describes the main features of the programs. The book should be considered as a supplement to ****books and reference words dealing with the particular spectroscopic techniques which generate the data included in the book. The use of the book to interpret spectra only requires the knowledge of basic principles of the techniques, but the contents are structured in such a way that it will serve as a reference book also to specialists. LabPlus International (Belgium), 2001, Vol. 15, Issue 1 This volume continues a long-standing series of compilations of spectroscopic data and empirical rules to calculate spectroscopic parameters. These have never been arranged in a classical ****book fashion but were restricted to supplying a data body for comparison with experimental values. Although much work has been done over the years to develop experimental techniques avoiding the input of empirical data, data systems such as Pretsch's books are still of great importance. They often allow problem solutions without sophisticated techniques, specialized knowledge and additional spectrometer time beyond routine measurements. Practically all teachers in spectroscopy and countless students know these books and work continuously with them. The present volume, now authored by E. Pretsch, P. Bühlmann and C. Affolter, is the latest in this series and has been greatly updated and enlarged. The size has mor or less doubled but the data arrangement has been retained according to the spectroscopic methods (C and H NMR, IR, MS, UV/Vis; Chapters 4- so that readers who are familiar with previous editions will find immediate access. Helmut Duddeck, Inst. of Org. Chemistry, Hannover/Germany Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry, 2002, Vol. 40, Issue 3, p. 247
Book Description
This volume presents in the form of ****s, tables, charts and graphs a modern compilation of spectroscopic reference data for IR, UV/Vis, 1H- and 13C-NMR, MS (incl. prototype spectra of almost every important class of organic compounds and spectra of MALDI and FAB matrix materials) and is intended as a short ****book and a hands-on guide for interpreting experimental spectral data and elucidating the chemical structure of the respective compound behind it. The concise ****s include special chapters on fragmentation rules in mass spectrometry and on currently used multipulse and 2-D NMR techniques. The book is primarily designed for students to be used during courses and exercises. The use of the book requires only basic knowledge of spectroscopic techniques, but is structured in such a way that it will support practitioners routinely faced with the task of interpreting such spectral information, and it will serve as data reference for specialists in the fields.

Product Description
Intrigued as much by its complex nature as by its outsider status in traditional organic chemistry, the editors of The Organic Chemistry of Sugars compile a groundbreaking resource in carbohydrate chemistry that illustrates the ease at which sugars can be manipulated in a variety of organic reactions.
Each chapter contains numerous examples demonstrating the methods and strategies that apply mainstream organic chemistry to the chemical modification of sugars. The book first describes the discovery, development, and impact of carbohydrates, followed by a discussion of protecting group strategies, glycosylation techniques, and oligosaccharide syntheses. Several chapters focus on reactions that convert sugars and carbohydrates to non-carbohydrate molecules including the substitution of sugar hydroxyl groups to new groups of synthetic or biological interest, cyclitols and carbasugars, as well as endocyclic heteroatom substitutions. Subsequent chapters demonstrate the use of sugars in chiral catalysis, their roles as convenient starting materials for complex syntheses involving multiple stereogenic centers, and syntheses for monosaccharides. The final chapters focus on new and emerging technologies, including approaches to combinatorial carbohydrate chemistry, the biological importance and chemical synthesis of glycopeptides, and the medicinally significant concept of glycomimetics.
Presenting the organic chemistry of sugars as a solution to many complex synthetic challenges, The Organic Chemistry of Sugars provides a comprehensive treatment of the manipulation of sugars and their importance in mainstream organic chemistry.

Heterocyclic Chemistry [ILLUSTRATED], Fourth edition

Book Description
This book has so closely matched the requirements of its readership over the years that it has become the first choice for chemists all over the world.Heterocyclic chemistry comprises at least half of all organic chemistry research worldwide. In particular, the vast majority of organic work done in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries is heterocyclic chemistry. The fourth edition of Heterocyclic Chemistry retains its original aims and flavour, thus maintaining the principal ******ive of earlier editions - to teach the fundamentals of heterocyclic reactivity and synthesis in a way that is understandable to second- and third-year undergraduate chemistry students. In recognition of the level at which much heterocyclic chemistry is now normally taught, the authors have included more advanced material, making the book appropriate both for postgraduate taught courses and to postgraduate students. It is important to emphasise that the more advanced sections of the book make it an important reference work for chemists at all levels who are working with heterocyclic compounds in industry. The preparation of the fourth edition has allowed the authors to review thoroughly the material included in earlier editions, to amend it in the light of new knowledge, and to include much recent work. For example, new sections deal with heterocyclic aspects of combinatorial chemistry, bioprocessing, and conducting polymers. In its more advanced sections, the book emphasises modern methods for the synthesis and chemical manipulation of heterocyclic compounds.Essential teaching material in the early chapters aims to capture the essence of heterocyclic reactivity in concise resumes suitable either as introductions, or as revisions/summaries for examination preparation. These early chapters are followed by detailed, systematic discussions of the chemical reactivity of particular heterocyclic systems. Original references and references to reviews are given throughout the ****. These are essential for postgraduate teaching and to research workers, but do not interfere with the readability of the **** for undergraduate students. Problems, divided into straightforward revision exercises, and more challenging questions (with solutions as an Appendix), help the reader to understand and apply the principles of heterocyclic reactivity and synthesis.

Quaternary Ammonium Salts
R. Alan Jones, “Quaternary Ammonium Salts (Best Synthetic Methods)”
Academic Press; 1st edition (January 2001) | ISBN: 012389171X | 544 pages | PDF | 9,5 Mb

This **** provides experimental methods for a wide range of organic reactions, systematically arranged according to reaction type, and describes the advantages and limitations of the procedures. Traditional methods to speed up organic reactions involve energy-consuming processes and costly and environmentally “unfriendly” solvents. Additionally, isolation of the product requires energy and time-consuming purification processes. A simple solution, especially for reactions involving anionic reactants, is the use of phase-transfer catalysis. Quaternary ammonium cations have the ability to transfer the anionic reactants as non-solvated ion-pairs from aqueous media into organic media. The resultant effect is to increase the rate of the organic reaction by enhancing the reactivity of the anionic species and increasing the encounter rate with the organic substrate. Side reactions are frequently eliminated so that the overall yield of the desired product is increased.
Quaternary Ammonium Salts presents procedures for reducing reaction times and the need for extreme conditions, which are frequently encountered under standard reaction procedures.
This is the only book to be published on quaternary ammonium salts. Best Synthetic Methods volumes allow the practicing synthetic chemist to choose between all the alternatives and assess their real advantages and limitations. Each volume of the series deals with a particular topic from a practical point of view, giving detailed examples and precise experimental directions and hints. With the emphasis on laboratory use, these volumes represent a comprehensive and practical guide to modern synthetic organic chemistry.

Review

"There are a number of strengths to this book. Firstly, the usage of diagrams and key phrases/bullet points is excellent, making the book user friendly and educationally sound.
The book complements, rather than competes with, standard core ****. It is distinct in its approach and should not be considered as just another organic chemistry book.
I imagine that this book will prove popular with undergraduates and I would be happy to recommend this book to my students - I am sure that their knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of chemisty would improve as a consequence."
Synthesis, 2004
"The author has made an effort to prsent the material clearly and to limit the **** to what is essential ("pictures speak louder than words"). This often works very well."
"The book fufulls its aim of providing a short summary of organic chemistry for revision purposes."
Angewandte Chemie 2004
"Despite the book's small size, each chapter is thorough, with coversge of all important reactions found at first-year level... ideal for the first-year student wishing to revise... and priced and designed appropriately." The Times Higher Education Supplement, 2004
"Parsons has successfully distilled an entire 1200 page ****book to the essentials a student should take away from a full year of undergraduate organic chemistry"
"...this **** provides an outline of what should be known and understood, including fundamental concepts and mechanisms"
"...the **** can then allow the student to discern quickly which reactions/concepts they understand and which ones they don't."

Modern Organic Synthesis in the Laboratory
(Paperback)
by Jie Jack Li (Author), Chris Limberakis (Author), Derek A. Pflum

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Searching for reaction in organic synthesis has been made much easier in the current age of computer databases. However, the dilemma now is which procedure one selects among the ocean of choices. Especially for novices in the laboratory, it becomes a daunting task to decide what reaction
conditions to experiment with first in order to have the best chance of success. This collection intends to serve as an "older and wiser lab-mate" one could have by compiling many of the most commonly used experimental procedures in organic synthesis. With chapters that cover such topics as
functional group manipulations, oxidation, reduction, and carbon-carbon bond formation, Modern Organic Synthesis in the Laboratory will be useful for both graduate students and professors in organic chemistry and medicinal chemists in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries.

About the Author
Jie Jack Li is a Medicinal Chemist at Pfizer Global Research and Development. Chris Limberakis is a Medicinal Chemist at Pfizer Global Research and Development. Derek Pflum is in the Chemical Research and Development Group at Pfizer Global Research and Development.

Editorial Reviews

Review
"...succeeds admirably in explaining in con**** many important principles of contemporary organic synthesis. This book is reasonably priced and I recommend Organic Synthesis Workbook to you highly." Applied Organo****llicchemisty

Product Description
From the Foreword written by Erick M. Carreira:

"... The Organic Synthesis Workbook is an ideal compilation of state-of-the art modern syntheses which wonderfully showcases the latest advances in synthetic chemistry in combination with fundamentals in a question-and-answer format. The structure of the book is such that the reader can appreciate the intricacies of strategic planning, reagent tailoring, and structural analysis within the con**** of the individual synthetic targets. In providing highlights of synthesis from a wider range of natural products classes (alkaloids, terpenes, macrolides) the reader is given a tour through a broad range of reaction chemistry and concepts. Moreover, because in its scope the authors have ignored international borders, the book effectively parlays the global aspect of current research in the exciting field of organic synthesis...

The Organic Synthesis Workbook promises to be to the current generation of graduate students, and even "students-for-life", what Ireland's and Alonso's books were to those of us who were graduate students in the 80's [Alsono: The Art of Problem Solving in Organic Chemistry, Ireland: Organic Synthesis]. The authors have wonderfully captured the thrill, the enjoyment, and the intellectual rigor that is so characteristic of modern synthetic organic chemistry."

Diazo Chemistry II: Aliphatic, Inorganic and Organo****llic Compounds
By Heinrich Zollinger (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology). VCH: New York. 1995. xiii + 522 pp. $125.00. ISBN 3-527-29222-5.
Michael P. Doyle
Trinity University

Heinrich Zollinger, who is a master of diazo group chemistry, has authoritatively and critically reviewed the broad subject in two volumes. The first contained the chemistry of aromatic and heteroaromatic diazo compounds. The second volume, which is the subject of this review, is devoted to aliphatic, inorganic, and organo****llic diazo compounds. In the 11 chapters that constitute this volume, Zollinger provides detailed descriptions of the synthesis of aliphatic diazonium ions and diazo compounds, the kinetics and mechanisms of diazotization reactions and deamination mechanisms, the structures of diazo compounds and their reactions, including dipolar cycloadditions and those involving carbene and carbenoid intermediates, and a diversity of topics such as transition ****l complexes, ion radicals, and nitrogen fixation that are intimately linked to a comprehensive survey of diazo chemistry but rarely found, if at all, in reviews.
Zollinger as a master teacher is evident in the construction of this volume and in its content. Beginning with a history of diazo compounds, he describes nomenclature, provides an overview, and, as an epilogue, gives a view toward the future. The topical development of each section provides the reader with the intellectual evolution that has led to current understanding. The nearly 2000 literature references which extend into 1994 are given in alphabetical order with respect to the first-mentioned author (annotated by citation within chapters for ease in discovery).
Significant insight into the structure and reactivities of diazo compounds is characteristically provided in this book. Sections on isomers of diazomethane, theoretical investigations on aliphatic diazonium salts and diazo compounds, acid-base equilibria of diazo compounds, and the N-electrophilicity of aliphatic diazo compounds provide fundamental understanding critical to evaluation of reactions and reactivities of diazo compounds. Extensive treatment is given to modern topics in carbene chemistry that include addition to aromatic hydrocarbons and fullerene[60] and to enantioselective reactions of carbenoids.
Zollinger has incorporated examples and applications of diazo compounds in inorganic and organo****llic chemistry, and he thereby broadens the subject from what has previously been thought to have been reserved for organic chemistry. Descriptions of diazo derivatives of polyhedral boron hydrides, ****l dinitrogen compounds, including nitrogen fixation, and aryldiazenido complexes, among others, are integrated into the general framework of this book. Their relationship to fundamental concepts in diazo chemistry is clearly presented.
Diazo Chemistry II: Aliphatic, Inorganic, and Organo****llic Compounds will be an invaluable reference for anyone involved in the chemistry of dinitrogen compounds. The critical assessment and ******ive overview provided by Heinrich Zollinger sets the stage for future action in this continuing drama.

Theoretical Organic Chemistry
(Theoretical and Computational Chemistry)
(Hardcover)
by C. Párkányi

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This volume is devoted to the various aspects of theoretical organic chemistry. In the nineteenth century, organic chemistry was primarily an experimental, empirical science. Throughout the twentieth century, the emphasis has been continually shifting to a more theoretical approach. Today, theoretical organic chemistry is a distinct area of research, with strong links to theoretical physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, computational chemistry, and physical organic chemistry.

The ******ive in this volume has been to provide a cross-section of a number of interesting topics in theoretical organic chemistry, starting with a detailed account of the historical development of this discipline and including topics devoted to quantum chemistry, physical properties of organic compounds, their reactivity, their biological activity, and their excited-state properties.
